LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

What is the Biblical Model for Leadership Development?
NATURAL EXAMPLE/ ANALOGY: MILITARY ORGANIC MANUFACTURING
Bob and I work for DoD and our job is to order fulfill / QA spare parts for soundness and safety. Some of the weapons systems used by the military are very old and antiquated but usable and repairable. Rather than build a whole new weapons system, the cost is less for the military to repair the weapon system and keep them running. Therefore, they will attempt to buy spare parts by getting new unused surplus or bids to make a new replacement part(s) for the non-mission capable weapon system.
However, in many cases, the OEM for a particular Weapon System won’t manufacture the replacement part(s) because it is too expensive for them to do so with all of the overhead and startup costs as well as trying to get the material which makes up the components that is sometimes difficult to get. When this happens the Engineering Support Activity for the military will to find an organic manufacturer. Organic Manufacturers are military run/ owned instillations throughout various branches of the service across the country that have the capability of taking an actual non-working part and reverse engineer it or build a new one from the military specs found in the drawing or catalog. In the case of an OEM who won’t give up the rights to the drawing/ specifications to the military because they are proprietary, an Organic Manufacturer will reverse engineer it by taking apart the actual non-working material and building an exact copy for its intended working function. Otherwise, as stated, they will build the part according to drawing specifications if the military owns the specs.
It is more cost effective and the margin of error is very slim to none because the military is actually making it for the military rather than a commercial third party or outside facility. More care is given as well as more knowledge about the actual end item/ weapon system and how that particular part is used. The part is customized to fit a weapons system that is customized for military use as well.
Commercial manufacturers often use the same system for public use such as HMMV verses the military version of taking its model and revising it as a Mine Resistant Ambush vehicle (MRAP). An iron plate is formed and attached to the undercarriage of the HMVV as a shield, along with other special metal plating through the body, windows and chassis to withstand explosive impacts. Likewise, a commercial HMMV is not at all effective in-Theatre against Improvised Explosive Devices (IED’s) used by the Taliban. Organic Manufacturers will take a HMMV and build it to military specifications for the intended purpose of enduring explosives in the rugged terrain of Afghanistan saving hundreds of lives on the fields of service.
The military knows how to build a replacement part for military use so Organic Manufacturing is being utilized in cases like this and is the way to go when an OEM can or won’t build it for them. The same principle was used by Jesus with His disciples in Leadership Development and Training to carry on the Mission of advancing the Kingdom of God in the earth!
Jesus’ model for leadership building was organic. He took a group of twelve and spent time with them explaining the kingdom, how it operates, and modeled the pieces by experience and His example such as casting out devils, healing the sick, raising the dead and preaching the gospel of the kingdom. The seeds of leadership are in each one of us but like any seed it must be watered, fertilized and tended to produce fruit. Being a disciple of Jesus Christ is being a leader in our homes, communities, church and every area we touch and have influence.
The Biblical model for leadership development continued through the Book of Acts with Peter and the Apostle Paul, establishing churches in Asia Minor and appointing elders and deacons in each local assembly.
Leadership building is not nearly as effective by sending someone off to Bible College in another state then they come back to a local church where they may use a completely different paradigm for ministry than what was taught in that Bible College. Also, Bible College is modeled after the Greek paradigm of classroom instruction verses the Hebrew Model of mentoring and a “hands on” approach. The best approach to leadership development is through mentoring or coaching with senior leaders who know how to do the work of the Kingdom within that leader’s local assembly and don’t just talk about it. The kingdom of God does not consist of mere speech but of power and demonstration! This form of leadership training is slim to none in the American Church and needs to change if we are going to raise up a generation of Joshua’s to carry on the Gospel of the Kingdom.
There are underlying principles that drives the desire and wisdom to build leadership within ourselves and others:
PRINCIPLE #1
A DISCIPLE OF CHRIST IS A LEADER-FIRST AT HOME (SAMARIA), THEN IN OUR CHURCHES, JOBS AND COMMUNITY (JUDEA ) AND WITHIN OUR OUTSIDE SPHERE OF INFLUENCE THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT MAY ALLOW IN MINISTRY (UTTERMOST PARTS OF THE EARTH)-
Acts 1: 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
PRINCIPLE #2
WE ARE ALL AT VARIOUS STAGES OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT-IT IS AN ONGOING PROCESS AND A COMMITED LIFESTYLE –
1 Corinthians 9: 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
PRINICPLE #3
WE NEVER “ARRIVE” AS THE PERFECT LEADER BECAUSE WE ARE NOT JESUS. ONLY HE HAD THE SPIRIT WITHOUT MEASURE. THE REST OF US ARE BEING TRANSFORMED, TRAINED AND CHANGED FROM GLORY TO GLORY
2 Corinthians 3: 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
PRINCIPLE #4
LEADERSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE BASED FROM THE CALL OF GOD! THE MOMENT WE STOP LEARNING IS THE MOMENT WE STOP GROWING AND SPIRITUAL ERROSION SETS IN GIVING PLACE TO USING OLD METHODS AND OPENING THE DOOR FOR DECEPTION AND OPERATING IN A PHARISEE SPIRIT VERSUS BY THE HOLY SPIRIT. KEVIN LEAL APTLY STATES IT TAKES FIVE TO SURVIVE (EPHESIANS 4: 11-13). THAT IS AN ONGOING LIFE STATEMENT THAT WE ALL NEED FIVE FOLD GIFTINGS SPEAKING INTO OUR LIVES FOR CONTINUED GROWTH AND SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT. THE KEY WORDS IN VERSE 13 THAT CLUE US IN TO THE FACT THAT WE NEVER ARRIVE THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN IS…”UNTIL WE ALL COME TO THE FULL MEASURE OF THE STATURE OF CHRIST….”
Other scriptures:
2 Timothy 3: 10-17 “You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 2: 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
PRINCIPLE #5
GOD NEVER CHANGES BUT HE IS ALWAYS DOING SOMETHING NEW. A LEADER MUST REMAIN TEACHABLE, PLIABLE AND HUMBLE AT ALL TIMES AND BEWARE OF BECOMING COMPLACEMENT OR DEPENDENT UPON FORMER METHODS
“Moab has been at rest from youth, like wine left on its dregs, not poured from one jar to another—she has not gone into exile. So she tastes as she did, and her aroma is unchanged.” Jeremiah 48: 11
PRINCIPLE #6
THE FLOCK OF GOD IS HIS; NOT MAN’S. THEREFORE GREAT CARE MUST BE USED NOT TO ABUSE ONE’S POSITION OF INFLUENCE AND LEADERSHIP! WE WILL EACH HAVE TO ANSWER TO GOD REGARDING HOW WE HANDLED HIS SHEEP!
“Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.” Psalms 100: 3
Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;” 1 Peter 5: 2
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INVOLVES THE FOLLOWING THINGS BUT THIS IS NOT ALL INCLUSIVE
1. LEADERS ARE EXAMPLES (SAMPLES OF CHRISTLIKE MORALS, ATTITUDES AND LIFESTYLE) FOR THE FLOCK –
ANALOGY: SIMPLICITY SAMPLES IN A CATALOG EXAMPLE WITH PATTERNS NUMBERED AND PIECES OF THE PATTERN TO LAY OUT ON THE CLOTH AND CREATE AN EXACT COPY OF THE SAMPLE. (1 Cor 10: 6; 1 Peter 5: 3; 1 Thess 1:7-8
“And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it” 1 Thess 1: 7-8
2. CHARACTER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN CHARISMA. CHARISMA WITHOUT CHARACTER IS LIKE A CHILD HANDLING A STICK OF DYNAMITE: i.e., ETHICS: MONEY, MORALITY, MOUTH
3. MARRIAGE & FAMILY LIFE– IF SINGLE CELEBACY/ SEXUAL PURITY. IF MARRIED, FIDELITY AND SOUNDNESS IN THE RELATIONSHIP. QUALIFICATIONS OF DEACONS AND ELDERS REGARDING MARRIAGE AND FAMILY ARE SCRIPTURALLY BASED. PRACTICALITY OF BEING A FATHER AND MOTHER YET A SPIRITUAL LEADER IN GOD’S HOUSE IS VERY IMPORTANT (BALANCE).
4. CHURCH PROTOCOL-DRESS AND BEHAVIOR OF A LEADER-IT’S A LIFESTYLE
5. PRAYING FOR AND MINISTERING TO GOD’S PEOPLE-WHAT TO DO WHAT NOT TO DO (ASSUMPTION VS GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT, COMPASSION, EMPATHY, EXPERIENCE, SPIRIT OF COUNSEL)
6. SUBMISSION TO GOD’S GOVERNING AUTHORITIES-SUBMIT MEANS TO VOLUNTARILY PLACE YOURSELF UNDER. TALK ABOUT CHURCH GOVERNMENT ITS PURPOSE AND REASONS AND HOW TO FLOW WITH IT EVEN WHEN YOU MAY NOT AGREE WITH CERTAIN DECISIONS. IF IT IS NOT SINFUL OR UNETHICAL HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR SENIOR PASTOR. IF IT IS QUESTIONABLE DISCUSS HOW TO APPROACH YOUR SENIOR LEADER. (1 Tim 5: 19; 1 Tim. 5: 1)
7. FAITHFULNESS TO THE FATHER AS A SON/ DAUGHTER AND MAINTAINING THE ATTITUDE AND LIFESTYLE OF BEING A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST. BEING FAITHFUL TO THE LOCAL ASSEMBLY WHERE THE FATHER HAS PLACED YOU.
