The Spiritual Orphan

"The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to son-ship.and by him we cry, “Abba Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory." Romans 8: 15-17

The Orphan-A child deprived by death of one or both of his parents. A child whose parent(s) abandoned them either physically or emotionally. A fatherless or motherless child. A child who has no family identity. A child who was deprived of protection or some advantage by one or both parents...Many times orphans suffer horrible abuses. They feel lost and alone. They become isolated in their thinking that no one understands how they feel because they have suffered so much emotional pain.

“See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.” Malachi 4: 5-6

"A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
is God in his holy dwelling.God sets the lonely in families,
he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land." Psalm 68: 5-6

Because of past abuse, death or abandonment an orphaned spirit mistakes correction for rejection and sees it as a lack of love. A person with an orphaned spirit will usually reject any authority who corrects them because they see that person through the lens of past misuse and abuse from their abuser(s) or those who abandoned them. Many times they will demonize or vilify authority in order to justify their offense from correction and high opinion of themselves they have adopted to compensate for their feelings of loss and insecurities.

Many times an orphaned spirit will vilify themselves and take on an attitude of self-blame and shame. Others with an orphaned spirit will make excuses rather than admit wrong. They have an insatiable need for acceptance and 'love'. To admit wrong is to feel more rejection or to take the blame justifies in their minds the deep sense of rejection they have. This is truly a wicked device of the enemy.

A person with a strong gift who has an orphaned spirit is particularly vulnerable to pride. Their gift becomes their identity and the thing that makes them acceptable to God and others rather than a means to serve. They have a difficult time submitting their gift to authority because that would mean relinquishing part of their identity.

This stronghold will keep a person imprisoned in a rebellious way of thinking which dwarfs their spiritual development. That's why we see so many 'children' in adult bodies. Until we 'see' and understand the Father's heart, we will never submit to the authority God has emplaced in ekklesia or anywhere else (Romans 13). It is the Father's pattern to equip us for His work through men and women of God emplaced by Him in ekklesia until we all come to the full measure of the stature of Christ. This is part of picking up our cross and denying self.

Unchecked orphan attitudes enable the enemy to bind us to continued cycles of defeat in the area(s) that are out of alignment with the will of God. He laughs while we weep and question God. The orphan spirit empowers the enemy to bind a person's will to continued patterns of wrong behavior because they refuse to 'hear' the voice of wisdom in correction. Orphans will often seek pleasure to ease their pain either through alcohol, drug abuse, material things and intimate relationships that result in more failure.

Because God loves us, He chastens and corrects us. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who restores our soul. His rod of correction truly does comfort us because it places us back to the position of ease and rest with Him.

Renouncing the lie of the enemy that God is NOT good and He is responsible for all the evil in the world is the first step to receiving deliverance from an orphaned spirit. We MUST REPENT (change the way we think) about the Father and realize that SATAN is the FATHER of lies and all EVIL-not The Lord Jesus Christ! God is GOOD all the time.

Let Him teach you and lead you beside still waters. He calls you His 'beloved'.

I was once a spiritual orphan who has discovered the Spirit of Adoption by the grace and long-suffering of God!

Yours for the Journey,
Pastor Mary Ann
