What is True Humility?

Mary Ann Wray

I have grappled pretty much my entire Christian life to understand true humility: what it looks like and how to define it. I have come to understand it as one who is totally God-Head reliant. At least that's how I see it at this point and in part. It's being clothed with Jesus and clothed by Jesus in His glory because we've been accepted in the beloved. This definition will evolve as I change and grow in Christ Likeness.

I believe Humility is being totally God reliant because you realize it is only by His empowering grace and presence you can do anything for Him. You understand that all things were created by Christ and through Christ. Because of this you understand that all good things in you and through you are gifts, not trophies. You are the trophy of His grace-not your gifts!

You only seek to bring Him glory and honor because you have begun to understand how magnificent He is and how deep, wide and vast His love truly is.

You treat everyone with graciousness because you have been graciously forgiven countless times.

You understand that while in your mortal body you won’t get it right all the time and need His grace every day to live an overcoming life!

“Submit to God, Resist the Devil Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.” 1 Peter 5:5-6 NKJV

“But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.” 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

James 4: 6-7
